Deworming – A Must for Your Pet’s Well Being and Health!

Thank you for visiting Vet Home Express [ offering at home vet care services including: Miami Beach, Sunny Isles, Aventura, North Miami Beach, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood Beach and parts of SE Broward].

Many parasites can infect your pet’s digestive system. The two most common ones are:

Hookworms

Pets can become infected by ingesting the larvae in the environment (usually passed in the feces of an infected animal or in the milk from a nursing mom), by eating infected rodents, or by larval penetration of the skin. Infection is more common in kittens and puppies. The worms typically live in the small intestines.

Most pets don’t show signs. However, anemia does occasionally occur and is the result of bloodsucking by the worms in the small intestines. Feces may become loose.

Other tell tale signs:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Occasional weakness causes by long term exposure

Tapeworms

Adult tapeworms are segmented worms found in the intestines. Tapeworms are usually acquired from ingesting fleas – for instance when an animal bites his itchy skin and bites a flea. Fecals are needed for diagnosis (please contact Dr. Cecilia to schedule a fecal exam in the comfort of your own home).

Tell tale signs include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Failure to digest and absorb food normally
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Pot-bellied appearance

Deworming treatment plans can help to control hookworm and tapeworm infections. Control of tapeworms requires both treatment and prevention. Flea control is critical for tapeworm control, even for indoor cats! It will be my pleasure to provide you with an effective preventative long-term treatment plan.
